Describes the personality and activities of Paul Touvier, the chief of the Milice (police) of Lyon during the Vichy regime, considered the main French collaborator with the Gestapo, participating in roundups of Jews and of the resistance. Condemned to death after the war, he escaped justice with the help of the Catholic Church, hiding in monasteries. Underlines the fact that Touvier is the first Frenchman who is going to be tried for "crimes against humanity". [Touvier was sentenced to life imprisonment in April 1994 and died in prison in 1996 - ed.]
