Surveys the reactions of French Jewry during the Dreyfus Affair as found in the Jewish press, various archival sources, rabbis' sermons, and correspondence of the Consistoire. Asserts that from the beginning of the Affair there existed cautious support for Dreyfus by Rabbi Zadok Kahn, Joseph Reinach, Bernard-Lazare, and others. Massive support in Jewish circles rose only after the publication of Zola's "J'accuse" in 1898. Analyzes diverging opinions, including that of Rabbi Weiskopf who interpreted the resurgence of antisemitism as divine punishment for the growth of liberal Judaism. Contains quotes from the Jewish press of various orientations. Concludes that the rehabilitation of Dreyfus served to strengthen the majority of Jews in France, but did not augment either the degree of religiosity or their commitment to Zionism.
